Goodman and Gilman's "The Pharmacologic Basis of Therapeutics," is a text familiar to virtually all American medical students as the standard pharmacology reference. The Sixth Edition represents a compendium of fifty-five contributors' scholarly efforts throughout 1,843 pages.

Like previous editions, the chemotherapy of parasitic diseases is thoroughly covered by Ian N. Rollo in Chapters 44–48 (pages 1013–1079). Drugs used in helminthiasis, malaria, amebiasis and other protozoal infections are covered. Page after page of identical material is contained in the new Sixth Edition compared with the previous edition. For example, the pages on suramin and pentamidine are exactly the same in the two editions except for the inclusion in the Sixth Edition of the Zip Code for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Melarsonyl has been omitted from the new text as a drug useful in the treatment of protozoal infections and Quinacrine has been added for the treatment of giardiasis.
