The editors of the CRC Handbook Series in Zoonoses have undertaken a most ambitious objective: "... to provide a guide and comprehensive reference source [on the zoonoses] for veterinarians, physicians, microbiologists, biologists, parasitologists, epidemiologists, health educators, and other health specialists engaged in research, control, and educational activities ...." Later volumes will be devoted to viral zoonoses (Section B), parasitic zoonoses (Section C), and antibiotics in zoonoses control and the environment (Section D). The editor-in-chief, James H. Steele, and section editors have done much to assure success in meeting their objective by securing reviews from a most impressive group of recognized authorities (more than 50 for these two volumes) under the guidance of an advisory board for each section.

As in any encyclopedic series such as this, particularly in the first edition, there are weaknesses and shortcomings of both a technical and substantive nature. One of the most serious technical deficiencies is the absence of a running title for each chapter at the top of the page.
