Adams & Maegraith: Clinical Tropical Diseases

7th edition, by B. MAEGRAITH. xii + 621 pages, illustrated. Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, London, Edinburgh, Melbourne. 1980. $85.50

Barnett L. Cline
Department of Tropical Medicine Tulane Medical Center New Orleans, Louisiana 70112

Dr. Maegraith deserves considerable credit for undertaking an enormously difficult task—a solo effort to revise and update a textbook on tropical diseases. This is the seventh edition of a very successful textbook which first appeared in 1953; it has become accepted as a useful part of the medical library of physicians practicing in tropical and developing countries, expecially those influenced by British training.

The book is designed for the practicing physician who has neither the time nor the inclination to probe deeply into the sources and validity of the information provided. References are omitted. As stated in the author's preface, "those interested in details of specific points can always find them; if not, they do not really need them."

Dr. Maegraith has succeeded in maintaining a modest size (627 pages compared with the 592 pages in the 6th edition, 1976), uniformity of style, and considering the task at hand he did an admirable job of updating the topics covered.
