The Immunology of Schistosomiasis: Workshop Report IV

The fourth annual informal Elvio H. Sadun Memorial Workshop on the "Immunology of Schistosomiasis" was held on 7 November 1978, in conjunction with the Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in Chicago, IL. This report presents a brief synopsis of that meeting.

The first area of discussion concerned the preparation and testing of schistosome antigenic materials. Dr. Fouad Boctor discussed some anomalies regarding the immunogenicity of a crude polysaccharide antigen which he prepared from eggs of either Schistosoma mansoni or S. japonicum. Although infected mice and immunized rabbits responded against the S. mansoni material, and both hosts responded against crude soluble egg antigen (SEA), S. japonicum-infected rabbits seemed not to respond to the polysaccharide antigen from the eggs of either species. Their refractoriness was commented on in relationship to purified moieties. It was discussed that there is an imminent need for monospecific antisera against schistosome materials.
