"Ghost" Forms of Giardia Lamblia Cysts Initially Misdiagnosed as Isospora*

Jacqueline P. Collins, Kenneth F. Keller AND Larry Brown
Department of Pathology, Louisville Jewish Hospital, and Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, Kentucky 40201

Because of their distinctive morphology the cysts of Giardia lambia usually are not mistaken for cysts or eggs of other intestinal parasites. At a hospital laboratory in Kentucky a case of giardiasis was encountered in which the initial fecal examination revealed only degenerated cysts of Giardia which were mistaken for the oocysts of Isospora at the one-sporoblast stage.

Accepted for publication January 31, 1978.
