Vesicular Stomatitis-Alagoas (VSA)

Strain: Brazil 1964

Information from: R. B. Tesh, Pacific Research Section, NAIAD, P.O. Box 1680, Honolulu, Hawaii 96806, 3 December 1975.

Antigenic group: Vesicular Stomatitis group.

Original source: Isolated by Claudio de Moraes Andrade at Recife, Brazil¹ from tongue epithelium of mule showing vesicular lesions of tongue and feet. Scrapings of tongue lesions collected in July 1964 at Alagoas, Brazil, Lat. 9°S,Long. 36° W. Habitat: Moist tropical lowland encompassing sugar plantation. Storage: Stored in glycerin at -20°C until tested.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Newborn mice inoculated ip¹ on 27 July 1964.

Validity of isolation: It is unknown whether reisolation was attempted or whether it was successful or not.

Properties of virus: Physical: Bullet-shaped.² Chemical: Single stranded RNA. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to chloroform.¹ Antigenic: Not tested for HA activity.
