Salanga (SGA)

Strain: An B 904 a

Information from: J. P. Digoutte, Institut Pasteur, B.P. 304, Cayenne, French Guiana, 15 May 1975.

Antigenic group: Ungrouped.

Original source: Isolated by J. C. Jacobi and M. Germain at Institut Pasteur, Bangui, from blood of young male Aethomys medicatus trapped alive on 24 September 1971 in Salanga, Central African Republic, Lat. 4°9'N, Long. 18°31'E. Habitat: Equatorial moist forest, clearing near Salanga village. Storage: Stored in electrical deep freezer at -75°C.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Mosquitoes ground in Earle's balanced salt solution containing bovine albumin and antibiotics.

Validity of isolation: Reisolation not tried but first virus of this type in the laboratory.

Properties of virus: Physical: Filterable through Millipore 220 nm. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to chloroform; control titer 106, after-treatment titer 102. Antigenic: No hemagglutinin detected using infected suckling mouse brain extracted with sucrose acetone and tested with goose erythrocytes at pH 5.7 through 6.6 and at temperatures of 37°C,room temperature, and 4°C.
