Original source: Isolated by O. de Souza Lopes et al. at Instituto Adolfo Lutz from brain (cerebellum) and upper spinal cord of 39-yr-old male, who had shown signs of encephalitis, fever, and coma. Specimens collected on 8 December 1975 at post-mortem examination in Iguape County, State of Sao Paulo, Lat. 24°45'S, Long. 47°35'W. Habitat: Banana plantation on large flat plain at sea level. Storage: Frozen at -60°C.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Suspensions inoculated ic into 2-day-old infant mice on 23 December 1975.
Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated and was distinct from other viruses in the laboratory.
Properties of virus: Physical: No data. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 1:1,000 sodium deoxycholate; control titer
