Antigenic group: Ungrouped.

Original source: Isolated by National Institute of Animal Health at Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan from blood of 10-yr-old cow manifesting fever, anorexia, lacrimation, deglutitive difficulty, and ulceration of oral-nasal mucosa. Sample collected on 20 September 1959 at Ibaraki Prefecture, central parts of Japan, Let. 37°N, Long. 140°E. Habitat: Open ricefield. Storage: Not stated.

Methods of isolation in laboratory: Blood defribrinated and 0.1 ml inoculated into primary bovine embryo kidney (BEK) cell cultures on 20 September 1959. Cell cultures maintained with YLH, Hanks' solution,0.5% lactalbumin hydrolysate, 0.1% yeast extract, and 10% calf serum. CPE observed after 1 blind passage.

Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated.
