Original source: Isolated by J. P. Digoutte and F. X. Pajot at Institut Pasteur, Bangui, from pool of mixed adult female Culex mosquitoes collected from human bait on 31 March 1966 at Bagaza, Central African Republic, Lat. 4°53'N, Long. 18°E. Habitat: Savannah with forest gallery. Storage: Frozen in Revco at -75°C.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Mosquitoes ground in Hanks' balanced salt solution containing 0.75% bovine albumin. Inoculated 0.02 ml ic and ip in 1-day-old mice on 28 July 1966.
Validity of isolation: Not reisolated but first virus of this type in laboratory.
Properties of virus: Physical: Filtered through Millipore 220 nm. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 50% ether; control titer 106.0, after-treatment titer 102.1.Sensitive to 0.02% sodium deoxycholate; control titer 104.0, after-treatment titer 101.0. Antigenic: Hemagglutinin detected using suckling mouse brain extracted with sucrose-acetone and tested with goose erythrocytes at pH 6.0 through 7.0. Optimal pH 6.4 and temperature 37°C.
