Virus-Insect Relationships

The first section of this volume reviews in seven chapters the virus diseases of insects. The characteristics of each of the diseases or group of diseases are described in general terms followed by a more detailed account of one or more specific viruses of the group. The section is liberally illustrated with electron micrographs of the viruses considered. Curiously, Nodamura virus which was isolated from Culex tritaeniorhynchus in Japan is discussed in a chapter on "Viruses affecting the honey bee and Drosophila species" because it has been shown experimentally to be pathogenic for bees. The chapter on iridescent viruses includes a brief account of those affecting several species of mosquitoes.

The second section is a miscellany of 12 short chapters on a variety of topics ranging from the classification and nomenclature of insect viruses to their serology, tissue culture, routes of infection and replication, latency, and some methods of staining for optical microscopy, to mention only some.
