Supported by The Rockefeller Foundation and edited by its President, Dr. John H. Knowles, and by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this collection of 18 essays on health in the United States by well-known health care intellectuals is a significant spin-off from Nelson Rockefeller's Commission on Critical Choices for America.

There is no attempt to review comprehensively existing policies and services, or to develop a grand plan for health care; rather to explore certain areas of special concern and to highlight some of the basic dilemmas. The result is a series of sharply focused, informative, thought-stimulating essays of interest both to those outside of (for whom they are said to be primarily intended) and within the health professions.

The overall tone relates to the title of the book and of one of the essays, "Doing Better and Feeling Worse."
