This is a Festschrift truly worthy of the name. It is a scientific and personal testimonial to the 85th birthday of one of the most respected and beloved biologists alive today: Cecil A. Hoare, F.R.S. It deals factually but with a glowing warmth with his personal and professional characteristics and with his profound influence in protozoology for over a half century. Hoare trained with the dominant protozoologists of the 1920's, V. A. Dogiel in prerevolutionary Russia, Clifford Dobell in Britain, who brought him to the Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research, and C. M. Wenyon, under whom Hoare served at the Bureau in the course of his 53 years there ... a period still continuing, 20 years after his "retirement!" As A. J. Duggan, Director of the Wellcome Museum of Medical Science, points out in his brief but eloquent biographical paean to Hoare:
