This book is composed of five sections. The first, by W. W. Macdonald, on Mosquito Genetics in Relation to Filarial Infections, describes hybridization experiments and problems of "cytoplasmic incompatibility" in mosquitoes. Recent findings of rickettsialike organisms in mosquito eggs and their role in incompatibility are reviewed. Studies on mosquito strains resistant to filarial infections and the infectivity tests on offspring from crosses between susceptible and resistant strains are described.

The second section, by D. Walliker, on Genetic Factors in Malaria Parasites and their effect on Host-Parasite Relationships, contains a discussion of hybridization techniques, the use of enzymes and drug resistance as genetic markers, and genetic recombination experiments. Strain-specific immunity and virulence are discussed in terms of the host-parasite relationship.

In Genetics of the Host-Parasite Relationship between Biomphalaria glabrata and Schistosoma mansoni, Charles S. Richards reviews the methods used in studies of snail susceptibility and resistance to schistosome infection, and the experimental establishment of substrains of Schistosoma mansoni of known infectivity to different strains of Biomphalaria.
