Humanizing Health Care: Alternative Futures for Medicine

A vital debate is currently being waged concerning the "where to" of health care delivery in the U.S. Politicians, consumers, medical personnel, academicians, and other interested individuals are forcing each other and themselves to take account of our present medical care system (systems would be more like it), and more important, to take a serious look at the future. Robert F. Rushmer, the current director of the Center for Bioengineering at the University of Washington, has produced an important contribution to this ongoing debate and account-taking in his new book, Humanizing Health Care: Alternative Futures for Medicine.

Rushmer considers both historical and contemporary factors as he discusses possible future directions for health care. Perhaps best of all, he states clearly in the preface that he will not "provide us with a blueprint, a pathway, or even a set of specific suggestions." What does he offer then?
