Development of Falciparum Malaria in a Panamanian Subspecies of Howler Monkey*

After adaptation to Colombian and then Panamanian Aotus trivirgatus, the Panama II strain of Plasmodium falciparum was infective for Aloutta villosa trabeata Lawrence. Five serial trophozoite passages were demonstrated, with parasitemias reaching 35,000 per mm3; four animals experienced multiple recrudescences, terminating as long as 175 days after inoculation.
