The Treatment and Control of Infectious Diseases in Man

This book is written by an epidemiologist who gained renown by his success in eradication of smallpox in West Africa. He has thus brought into his authorship a strong orientation in large scale infectious disease control as well as in tropical medicine. For this reason, The Treatment and Control of Infectious Diseases in Man by Dr. Imperato may have some special interest for workers in tropical medicine compared to the many other books on the same topic.

The book is divided into nine sections: Section One—General Considerations; Sections Two through Six dealing with bacterial, viral, mycotic, parasitic, and rickettsial-spirochetal infections; Section Seven—Diseases of Mucous Membranes and Skin; Section Eight—Hemorrhagic Fevers; and Section Nine—Miscellaneous Topics. The author apparently had difficulty fitting his material into this scheme.

Section One presents a well written and interesting historical review, and general principles of epidemiology and control of infectious diseases.
