Biochemistry of Parasites, second edition, is an encyclopedic reference text to the chemical composition and metabolism of endoparasitic protozoa and helminths. Coverage is extended to include parasite induced changes in host tissue chemistry and function, and the influence of host physiological processes on parasites. Sections on metabolic pathways include reference to modes of action for drugs employed in parasite chemotherapy. There is also discussion of parasite fine structure where information obtained by electron microscopy has had a bearing on biochemistry and physiology.

Each of the nine chapters (Inorganic Substances, Distribution and Nature of Carbohydrates, Metabolism of Carbohydrates, Host-Parasite Relationships, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic Acids, Vitamins, Respiration) is an authoritative review of the literature up through early 1973. Though the chapter headings for the first and second editions are identical, many chapters in the second have been almost entirely rewritten. None are historical reviews, the emphasis being placed on newer findings. A significant amount of material covered in the first edition, published in 1966, is presented in abbreviated form, and obsolete data have been omitted.
