Tropical Pathology

by HERBERT SPENCER and others. xiii + 765 pages, illustrated. Springer-Verlag, New York, Inc., 175 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10010. 1973. $88.60

Paul C. Beaver
Department of Parasitology Tulane Medical Center New Orleans, Louisiana 70112

In twenty-five chapters, seventeen of which were written or co-authored by the senior author who is Professor of Morbid Anatomy, University of London at St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School, all of the bacterial, rickettsial, viral, parasitic and neoplastic diseases which occur mainly in the tropics are described; many others that are distributed more generally are individually considered also. Among the common parasitic infections of man only enterobiasis is omitted. Among the eight other specialist collaborators who contributed chapters or sections, five are affiliated with hospitals and universities in London (A. D. Dayan, R. G. Huntsman, M. S. R. Hutt, G. C. Jenkins) or Liverpool (B. G. Maegraith), and three are favorably located for a rich first-hand experience in their respective specialties in Hong Kong (J. B. Gibson), Brazil (F. Köberle), and Venezuela (K. Salfelder).

The book will be of interest to microbiologists, parasitologists, and physicians as well as to pathologists.
