Numerous publications have appeared recently on medicine and public health in the People's Republic of China, which have tended to emphasize the incorporation of traditional Chinese medicine into teaching and practice. In some instances, practitioners of western medicine have been decried, and institutions, such as the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), have been criticized. Joshua A. Horn, Away With All Pests. An English Surgeon in China: 1954–1969. Monthly Review Press, 116 West 14th Street, New York, N.Y. 10011. 1971.) says (p. 88), "most of the modern-type doctors had one thing in common; culturally and ideologically they were oriented ... towards Western Imperialism. This was illustrated in an extreme form by the old Peking Union Medical College which was sponsored and controlled by the Rockefeller Foundation. On the surface, it seemed to many ... to be a purely philanthropic undertaking.
