This volume is the first in a promised series of monographs edited by Emmanuel Farber and entitled "The Biochemistry of Disease, A Molecular Approach to Cell Pathology." The stated objective of the series is to "highlight" some of the most interesting details of the biochemistry of disease since there is insufficient information for a comprehensive treatise on this subject. In this initial volume, The Cell Cycle and Cancer, experts review contemporary knowledge on various aspects of the parameters of the cell cycle in selected tissues and the biochemical events occurring during each phase of the cell cycle. The series editor expresses the hope that these reviews will provide an "important vehicle for learning more about the cellular biochemical basis of neoplasia" as well as lead to "more efficacious ways to treat cancer."

The content of The Cell Cycle and Cancer succeeds only imperfectly in meeting these ambitious goals.
