Snake Venoms and Envenomation

This small volume contains a surprisingly complete review of the current status of knowledge of the biochemistry and pharmacology of snake venoms and of some concepts of the treatment of snakebite. In addition, information is given concerning identification of venomous snakes, morphology of salivary glands of snakes, and on recovery of snake venoms from tissues. This material is presented in a well organized manner in nine chapters by highly qualified, experienced investigators. The editor, Dr. Minton, has done an excellent job in coordinating the efforts of a cosmopolitan group of writers so as to achieve a uniform style of presentation.

The opening chapter on identification of poisonous snakes by Sherman Minton is a brief, but effective, summary of this subject. Much of the information given concerns snakes which occur in the United States and Mexico. Only three references are listed. Unfortunately, the book is an offset reproduction of the original publication which appeared in Clinical Toxicology, volume 3, no. 3, 1970, and effectiveness of several of the illustrations is reduced.
