Reconstructive Surgery in Leprosy

by ERNEST P. FRITSCH, All-Africa Leprosy and Rehabilitation Training Center, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. xiv + 224 pages, illustrated. Williams & Wilkins Co., 428 E. Preston Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202. 1971. $12.75

Carl D. Enna, M.D.
Chief, Surgery USPHS Hospital Carville, Louisiana

This is the first book devoted entirely to reconstructive surgery in leprosy. As such, it will be of value to surgical, medical, and paramedical personnel working with this disease. It is a small book of 225 pages, but covers adequately the common deformities of leprosy by devoting chapters to the face, hands, and feet. Each chapter is concise, clear, and pertinent, conveying insight into the problems likely to be encountered by the surgeon as well as the physical therapists who are a necessary part of any team hoping to obtain successful results. The author states that this book is not intended to be a substitute for inservice training, nor does its review qualify anyone to undertake this work without further introduction and contact in this field. He notes that it is primarily a handbook, and certainly it is a valuable guide to the present-day methods of surgical rehabilitation in leprosy.
