Isolation of Leptospira Javanica from Rats on Ishigaki Island

Yuzuru Kobayashi, Tomohiro Kusaba AND Ryosuke Ueki
First Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan

Five isolations of Leptospira were made from Rattus rattus on Ishigaki Island of the Yaeyama Islands in the Ryukyus in 1967 and 1968. By cross-agglutination tests and cross-absorption tests, all were identified as Leptospira javanica, Rat Batavia 46 strain. The organisms showed little pathogenicity for guinea pigs.

Accepted for publication September 30, 1971.
