Treatment of Actinomycetoma with Sulphamethoxazole Plus Trimethoprim

El Sheikh Mahgoub
Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, Sudan

Five patients with actinomycetoma were treated with Septrin® (sulphamethoxazole plus trimethoprim). Complete cure was obtained in each patient in a period of treatment ranging from 8 to 21.5 months. Treatment was not without side effects. A marked decrease in white blood cells and hemoglobin was noticed in one case and decreased white cells alone in another. Treatment was started in hospital but completed on an out-patient basis. No signs of recurrence have been seen since treatment was stopped. The causative agents involved were Actinomadura madurae, A. pelletieri, Nocardia brasiliensis, and Streptomyces somaliensis.

Accepted for publication November 20, 1971.
