Cutaneous Responses of Normal Subjects to Histolyticin from Entamoeba Histolytica

Cutaneous responses to an antigenic extract (histolyticin) from Entamoeba histolytica were studied in normal volunteers. Of twenty-three subjects skin tested twice with 2 µg of antigen protein, one developed a positive response 24 hours following the second test. None of eight subjects tested twice with 4 µg had positive reactions. An initial 8 µg skin test produced significant local responses at 15 minutes in three subjects; 24-hour reactions were not seen. After the second 8 µg skin test, six subjects had 15-minute and four subjects had 24-hour cutaneous responses. These findings indicate that the 8 µg dose of histolyticin apparently sensitizes normal subjects and is therefore excessive for routine diagnostic or epidemiologic studies.
