Studies of the ecology of Venezuelan encephalitis virus in endemic situations were conducted in southeastern México during the period 196167. These were collaborative undertakings by the Department of Microbiology, Cornell University Medical College, the Instituto Nacional de Virologia, Instituto de Salubridad y Enfermedades Tropicales, Secretaria de Salubridad y Asistencia of México, and the Pan American Health Organization. This paper, the first of eight that report the results of the investigations, describes the background, the study sites, and the general modus operandi of the studies.
