To the Editor:

I refer to Health on the Horn of Africa: A Study of the Major Diseases of Somalia, by Dr. Kevin M. Cahill, the small book that you reviewed in the July 1970 number of the Journal.

I spent 6 years (1953–1959) as a physician in the part of Somalia that was before independence under Italian Trusteeship Administration. Since Dr. Cahill seems to refer to that period in his book, I should like to comment upon some of the statements he made. My comments do not refer to your review: your bona fides is obvious.

The first evident fact is that nobody seems to have checked the manuscript and the proofs of Dr. Cahill's book. Some localities appear under two or three names; scientific names are misspelled; and in the lists of references there are numerous errors in the names of authors and in the titles cited. This applies particularly to Italian publications, a minor but distressing point.
