Two strains of rabies virus isolated from dog brains, one (V308) passed three times in Swiss albino mice and the other (V644) passed twice in Swiss albino mice, have been successfully transmitted rectally for 5 serial passages in the Syrian hamster. Organs (heart, liver, lungs, spleen, kidneys, intestines and feces, brain, spinal cord) from the fifth serial passage of each strain were inoculated rectally and intracerebrally into hamsters. Regardless of the route of inoculation all organs tested were infective except the pooled feces and intestines.
These two strains of rabies street virus produced paralytic rabies in hamsters when the virus was administered rectally.
