Antigenic group: Tete (Bunyamwera Supergroup).

Original source: Isolated by Arbovirus Unit at the South African Institute for Medical Research from pooled liver, kidney, heart, and pancreas tissues of a well, adult Spotted-backed Weaver Bird (Ploceus cucullatus) caught 5 February 1959 in a mist net at Ndumu, Natal, South Africa, Lat. 27° S, Long. 32° E. Habitat: Tropical savanna. Storage: Tissues stored in solid carbon dioxide freezer until inoculation in mice.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Pooled organs ground in 0.75% bovine plasma-albumin solution. Inoculated 0.02 ml ic in 2-day-old mice on 16 February 1959.

Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated. Antigenically similar viruses isolated from birds in same area.

Properties of virus: Physical: No data. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 20% ether; control titer 10^4.8, after-treatment titer <10^2.0.
