Information from: Arbovirus Infections Unit, National Communicable Disease Center, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., 9 December 1968.

Antigenic group: Simbu.

Original source: Isolated by R. H. Kokernot at Center for Zoonoses Research, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois, from whole blood of well Progne subis (Purple Martin) caught in mist net 27 July 1964 at Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois, Lat. 37° 11' N, Long. 88° 45' W. Habitat: Brushy area between village and Ohio River. Storage: Blood stored on solid CO₂ or in -70°C Revco until tested.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Whole blood diluted in 0.75% bovine albumin in phosphate-buffered saline. Inoculated 0.03 ml ic in 2- to 3-day-old mice on 10 August 1964.

Validity of isolation: Reisolation not tried.

Properties of virus: Physical: Filterable through Millipore (APD not given). Chemical: RNA virus as determined with 5-BdUR in Vero cell cultures using vaccinia and WEE as controls. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 1:200 sodium deoxycholate; control titer 10^7.0, after-treatment titer 10^2.3.
