No. 224, Mount Elgon Bat (MEB)

Information from: D. Metselaar, Netherlands Medical Research Centre, P. O. B. 9370, Nairobi, Kenya, 31 October 1968.

Antigenic group: Ungrouped.

Original source: Isolated by the East African Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, Uganda, from salivary glands of adult male Rhinolophus hildebrandtii eloquens, caught by net on 9 August 1964 at Kimilili-Bungoma District, Kenya, Lat. 0.8° N, Long. 34.7° E. Habitat: Cave on slope of Mount Elgon. Storage: Specimen stored at -70°C until inoculated into mice.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Tissues ground in 0.75% bovine-plasma albumin in PBS. Inoculated 0.05 ml ic, ip, and sc in newborn mice on 19 October 1964.

Validity of isolation: Reisolation not tried, but first and only isolation in the laboratory.

Property of virus: Physical: Did not pass Seitz EK filter. Filterable through Gradocol membrane APD 450 nm but not APD 200 nm. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 50% ether; control titer 106.1, aftertreatment titer 103.3.
