Building the Health Bridge, Selections from the Works of Fred L. Soper, M.D.

edited by J. AUSTIN KERR. xxxvii + 567 pages. Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Indiana. 1970. $17.50

Dr. Fred L. Soper needs no introduction to the readers of this Journal, many of whom have been associated with him or have followed with admiration his achievements during the past half century. It is indeed exactly 50 years since he joined the International Health Board of The Rockefeller Foundation and proceeded to Brazil to commence the work, initially in hookworm control and subsequently mainly in vectorborne disease eradication, that is commemorated in this volume containing his selected papers and reports.

Following a foreword by Stanhope Bayne-Jones, there is a lengthy introduction by J. Austin Kerr which contains not only a biographical sketch of Dr. Soper but also an outline of his distinguished scientific career presented in the form of background to and summaries of the papers that make up the bulk of the book. The latter consists of 12 parts, containing 45 selections (many considerably condensed) from Dr. Soper's scientific contributions, and is concluded with a bibliography of his publications together with an index.
