Treasurer of The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The accompanying audit summarizes the financial condition of the Society for the year ended 31 December 1969. It represents the first complete year under our contract with Allen Press for the publication of the Journal. The audit for the previous year ending 31 December 1968 (see Am. J. Trop. Med. & Hyg., 18: 814817) covered a transitional period when there were also financial obligations with Williams and Wilkins Company.
At first glance, the present financial report is discouraging. It shows decreases in (a) cash balance of $4,639.94 and (b) net worth of $5,650.95. The source of the problem is apparent from the "Schedule of Journal Income and Expenses," which shows our expenses to be $13,249.94 more than our income. As of 31 December 1969, various authors owed the Society $17,349.27 for extra pages, subvention, a supplement, line revisions, and art retouches.
