The Flies of Western North America

This work was begun in 1927 as a list of west-coast Diptera, but the importunities of time and funding delayed its completion for 40 years. What we now have is a monumental life's work that describes the Diptera west of the 100th meridian from Alaska south to Baja California. Included are family and generic keys with descriptions and invaluable personal notes on more than 8,000 species. These comments include remarks on biology and distribution and seasoned judgments on sticky taxonomic questions couched in engaging prose. In discussing the biting stable fly, for example, Cole aptly refers to the house fly as its "flabby-mouthed relative." Again his leaven is glimpsed in a discussion of the fly fauna of the west: "... or we could include the Aleutian chain, those dismal droplets off the snout of Alaska, and collect furry scatophagid flies on Adak, at 165° West."
