Long-Term Persistence of Modoc Virus in Hamster-Kidney Cells

In vivo and in vitro Demonstration*

Harald Norlin Johnson
Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory, California State Department of Public Health, Berkeley, California 94704

Modoc virus, a member of group B of the arthropod-borne viruses, produced an infection in a hamster with excretion of the virus in the urine for a period of 5 months. The presence of the virus in the kidney in a state of latency was demonstrated by cell culture of kidney tissue at 14 months after inoculation with the virus. The blood serum contained a high level of antibody against the virus. and direct inoculation of the kidney tissue into animals did not reveal active virus.

Accepted for publication December 1, 1969.
