The parasitologic problems encountered in Hawaii present a situation somewhat unique to Hawaii and other Pacific islands, as most parasites are considered to have been introduced into the area. In Hawaii, this introduction began with the first colonization 1,500 or more years ago, but did not reach significant levels until the last two centuries. The first recognition of many parasites was made only in recent decades. The parasites now present a broad representation of recognized parasitic groups. Thus, while the scope of this book deals with problems of a limited and defined area, much of the information present is germane to parasitologic problems found in the continental United States and other parts of the world.

The book is a revision of an earlier book Parasitic Infections of Man and Animals in Hawaii published in 1964 as Bulletin No. 61 of the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Hawaii. Several sections were rewritten, a section on parasite control added, and the bibliography updated.
