As pointed out by Dr. Catty in the preface, the major portion of this monograph was originally presented as a doctor of philosophy thesis in 1967. As a result, the format of the monograph is rather formal, and the author apologizes for this to the reader. The major divisions of the monograph are as follows: 1) Introduction, 2) General Scheme of the Experiments, 3) Materials and Methods, 4) Results, 5) Discussion, 6) Conclusions, and 7) References.

Most of the information available on the immunologic response of animals to Trichinella infections has been derived from studies with mice. As a result, this monograph is particularly welcome in that guinea pigs were used and, thereby, provides investigators a chance to compare results from various studies. Different species of animals respond differently to infections with the same helminth, and it may be that careful study of these differences will uncover some fundamental concepts of the immune responses.
