This volume, written primarily for ophthalmologists, should be of special interest to tropical-disease investigators, public-health workers, and nutritionists. The eye, with its many types of vascular and avascular specialized tissues, is particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies and metabolic disorders. The ease with which it can be examined under magnification by the slit-lamp and corneal microscope, and by the ophthalmoscope, makes it an organ of prime diagnostic importance. In this volume, the various diagnostic changes are well-described and well-illustrated by the authors.

It is natural that biochemical changes and abnormalities should receive major attention, but the volume is not a treatise on the biochemistry of the eye; rather it is a summary of biochemical processes underlying ocular disease, with clinical descriptions and therapeutic suggestions. Laboratory procedures useful for diagnosis are included but are not described in detail.

The volume is divided into eight chapters that cover all the known and suspected nutritional and metabolic diseases.
