The volume of J. François arrives in the nick of time. The recrudescence of the ocular mycotic pathology calls for an up-to-date restatement of our knowledge in this particular area. The book is divided in two major parts.

In the first one, the author recalls briefly the basic notions of general mycology as well as the taxonomic classification of the fungi. He then discusses the necessary steps one has to follow to establish a sound mycologic diagnosis: namely, the collection of pathologic material for direct microscopical examination, the culture of this material on specific culture media (the composition of nine of the most important is given in full), the experimental inoculation in laboratory animals, the skin test, and the seroreaction.

After the description of each of these steps, the factors that are favorable for the development of mycosis are discussed: antibiotics, whose action is still controversial and corticoids, whose harmful effect is unanimously admitted.
