This is a compilation of five Heath Clark Lectures given at the University of London in 1965 and is rendered more readable by the author in following the instructed mission not to be "too scientific or technical" but to "deal with aspects of history, education, and the relationship of the humanities to science" than the usual scientific account of a human disease complex. He has done just that in providing a good balance of historical fact, modern progress in the study of trombiculid-mite vectors and scrub typhus with ecologic applications, liberally sprinkled with fascinating personal experience, anecdotes, and philosophical "musings" (as labeled in prefactory remarks) that reach beyond the titular scope.

The background and provocative theme naturally stem from Dr. Audy's mission in World War II with the British Forces in Southeast Asia as a medical advisor and as chief of the British scrub typhus laboratory on the Indo-Burma frontier.
