Pathology of Tumours

Fourth Edition, by R. A. Willis, D.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.S., F.R.A.C.P., Hon. LL.D. (Glasgow), Honorary Research Fellow, University of Leeds, Consultant Pathologist to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London. xiv + 1019 + 41 pages, illustrated. Appleton-Century-Crofts, New York, N.Y. 1967. $27.50

Sylvanus W. Nye
Department of Pathology University of North Carolina School of Medicine Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514

Dr. Willis's long and vast experience has given him great understanding of disease caused by tumorous growths. Although this is a personal book, his own opinions are clearly stated as such.

The first 200 pages of the book are a general discussion of the nature, classification, etiology, and behavior of tumors. The general practitioner or pathologist will be stimulated to reconsider but probably not change his own views while reading Willis's discussions of what a tumor is and its innocence or malignancy.

There is a relatively lengthy review of carcinogenic chemicals and the experimental production of tumors in animals by a variety of other agents including nematodes. The chapter "Statistical Study of Tumours" covers errors of diagnosis, the nature of hospital samples, racial and age incidence, trends in tumor incidence, and heredity.
