The Capillary-Tube Precipitin Test

A Rapid Serologic Aid to Clinical Diagnosis in Invasive Amebiasis

S. J. Powell
The Amoebiasis Research Unit and the Department of Medicine of the University of Natal, * Durban, South Africa

Serum from patients with amebic dysentery, amebic liver abscess, and a control group without clinical evidence of invasive amebiasis was tested by the capillary-tube and gel-diffusion precipitin methods. Comparable results were obtained.

The capillary-tube precipitin technique was found to be sufficiently sensitive, specific, and reproducible for use by clinicians requiring a simple and rapid aid to diagnosis in emergencies. It could be of some value as a simple serologic test for invasive amebiasis where more advanced laboratory facilities are lacking.

Satisfactory results were also obtained with a commercially prepared antigen. Wider application of diagnostic serologic tests in amebiasis is warranted should such an antigen become freely available.

* The Amoebiasis Research Unit is sponsored by the following bodies: the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Natal Provincial Administration, the University of Natal, and the United States Public Health Service (Grant AI 01592).
