This final volume in the series generally maintains the excellent quality of its predecessors. In the present volume, as in much of the earlier cancer work, the curious policy of having the review chapters written by nonexperts has continued. Only Elson (Preclinical Pharmacology) has published in the field he reviews, and interestingly, the Elson chapter is of least interest to the general reader. The chapter on Alkylating Agents by Ochoa and Hirschberg is written in a lively style—quite a remarkable feat considering the masses of material to be covered. They manage also to accomplish difficult tasks of a relatively complete resource-book of citations as well as making coherent and succinct summaries.

Wade's chapter takes a much more tabular form, and covers the field of hormones quite well. He neglects, surprisingly, to mention the effect of progesterone on hamster and human renal cell tumors.
