L'Eradication du Paludisme en Roumanie

This book describes the story of malaria and its cradication in Romania. It is interesting to note that malaria eradication as such started there in 1955 after control operations had already reduced the incidence of the disease by 99.7%.

Malaria has always been found in Romania. Until 1948, about 300,000 cases were registered annually. From time to time, outbreaks of the disease would flare up. During the last such dramatic episode in 1945–1946, the disease affected up to 90% of the population in the Tulcea area, and the mortality rate reached 210 per 100,000 population.

After World War II the Romanian government started a concerted attack against this disease. The population then living in malarious areas was of the order of 6,000,000.

The availability of DDT was, of course, a determining factor in the decision to streamline the unorganized efforts of the period between the two European wars.
