Ilhéus virus was isolated for the first time from an apparently normal person infected in a rain forest area of Colombia. The virus isolation resulted from tests of blood samples from 396 persons living in a penal colony coincident with a suspected outbreak of infectious hepatitis. Serologic tests of 358 sera confirmed the past activity of Ilhéus virus in this population.
