Isolation of Ilhéus Virus from Man in Colombia*

E. Prías-Landínez, C. Bernal-Cubides AND A. Morales-Alarcón
Instituto Nacional de Salud, Bogotá, Colombia, Apartado Aéreo 3495

Ilhéus virus was isolated for the first time from an apparently normal person infected in a rain forest area of Colombia. The virus isolation resulted from tests of blood samples from 396 persons living in a penal colony coincident with a suspected outbreak of infectious hepatitis. Serologic tests of 358 sera confirmed the past activity of Ilhéus virus in this population.
