Since publication of the last edition of this book 10 years ago, a vast amount of knowledge has been gained in the area of immunology. Some of the salient features of this period of research have been incorporated into this newer edition, but for the most part, much of the older literature is surveyed, and controversial areas are avoided.

As with the third edition, the areas of antigen-antibody reactions, complement, blood groups, and hypersensitivity are thoroughly examined.

Although a new chapter covering tolerance and transplantation has been added, it is somewhat short in view of the amount of research accomplished in these areas. The treatment of immunoglobulins and their structure is discussed, but more elaboration on the nomenclature is perhaps warranted. Also, the significance of the primary lymphoid organs exemplified by thymus, Peyer's patches, and bursa of Fabricius should have been included.

As an introduction to immunochemistry, as stated in the preface, many important areas are omitted.
