The new third edition of Practical Dermatology has been completely revised and updated and is indeed a useful textbook. Adhering to the original premise of providing a well-illustrated and concise text for students, general practitioners, and specialities outside dermatology, it has been expanded and improved to include those in dermatologic training as well. In particular, the most dynamic areas of change are reflected in their respective chapters, e.g., the basic sciences, the connective-tissue disorders, dermatitis medicamentosa as well as the viral disease and systemic mycoses. If there is a criticism, it must be the mild confusion in the new reference systemthe references at the end of each chapter are not subdivided to correspond to the test's subdivisions, but after the reader becomes used to the system, it is a minor inconvenience. Also, one wonders why the authors discuss the newer concepts of the connective-tissue disorders under the older chapter title, "The Collagen Diseases."
