Treatment of Urinary Bilharziasis in a Small Focus with Sodium Antimony Dimercaptosuccinate (Astiban®)*

F. Arfaa{dagger}, E. Tohidi{ddagger} AND A. Ardelan§
Institute of Public Health Research, Teheran University, Teheran, Iran

A slow method of administering sodium antimony dimercaptosuccinate was tried in 163 cases of haematobium bilharziasis in an effort to reduce side-effects. The drug was given over a period of 21/2 weeks, the total amount being the same as tried previously in a short 5-day administration schedule.

The severity and number of side-effects were the same in both trials. However, the data suggest that the parasitologic rate of cure is reduced from 100% in the short schedule to 80% in the slow one.

* These studies were supported by the Institute of Public Health Research, School of Medicine, Teheran University, and fundings of the Ministry of Health and Plan Organization for the WHO-assisted Bilharziasis Study and Research Project (Projects No. 777 and 63001).
