This book is an English translation of the third edition of V. A. Dogiel's book A Course of General Parasitology. The book was first published in 1941, and the second edition appeared in 1947. After Professor Dogiel's death in 1955, Professors Polyanski and Kheisin undertook to revise and enlarge the book. Although approximately one-half of the book was rewritten, the name of V. A. Dogiel was retained as author, but the title of the book was changed to General Parasitology. This book was published by the Leningrad University Press in 1962 and the translation was done by Dr. Z. Kabata of the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen.
The book consists of four parts. The first part is concerned with general principles of parasitism. After an appropriate introduction, the authors define parasites as "... those animals which use other living animals as their environment and source of food, at the same time relinquishing to their hosts, partly or completely, the task of regulating their relationships with the external environment."
